Do you know where this is?
Staffordshire Past Track has just added an historic image of sheep grazing on Cannock Chase to its collection. The image is one of a number taken by Walter Williams of Stafford that date from around 1890 to 1897, but the exact location isn’t known. If you have any ideas, please get in touch. The cottage (with smoking chimney) in the dip to the right hand side of the picture might give some clues.
Sheep, along with cattle, horses and even geese used to be a commonplace sight on the Chase up until the Great War. The image shows an open heathy landscape, with what appears to be scattered bracken in the foreground and middle ground, with some scrubby vegetation in the background, and trees in the distance.
Staffordshire Past Track is managed by Staffordshire County Council’s Archives and Heritage Service.
